How do you pick a hockey stick for your child?

When it comes to choosing a hockey stick for your child, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind.

You’ll need to choose the correct size, consider the flex of the stick, and decide on the curve of the blade.

You’ll also want to think about the level of play they’re at. If they’re just starting out, you’ll want to look for a stick that’s durable and easy to use.

With these factors in mind, you should be able to choose the best youth hockey stick for your child.

Don’t forgot to add a balance board to improve your kid’s stick handling abilities. Check out our article -How to choose the best hockey balance board.

How to choose the right stick length for your child?

A common question we tend to hear is: What size hockey stick does my child need?

The first thing you need to do is measure your child’s height – the general rule of thumb is that the stick should come up to between their chin and nose.

You can head over and check out my article on choosing the perfect hockey stick length.

How to choose the correct flex for your child’s hockey stick?

What flex does my child need?

You also need to consider the stick flex, youth sticks usually offer a flex of 20-40. Flex is the amount of give or bend in the shaft of the stick.

A higher flex is better for experienced players who can generate more power, while a lower flex is better for beginners or players with a lighter build.

Important! Cutting changes the flex

Remember! Cutting the length of a hockey stick will increase its flex. The general rule of thumb is; for every 1 inch you cut off of a hockey stick, it will gain anywhere between 3-5 flex.

This means, that if you buy your child a stick with 20 flex, and then cut 4 inches off of it because it’s too long; you would increase that stick’s flex by 12-20.

That could essentially double the flex of your child’s stick, making it impossible for them to load up their shots.

What curve is best for youth hockey players?

You need to decide on the curve of the blade. A deeper curve will give players more control more power and accuracy, while a shallower curve is better for making quick, precise passes.

Determine the kick point for your kids stick

The specific design of a stick can have a significant impact on a player’s performance. One of the most important factors to consider is the kick point.

The kick point is the part of the stick that flexes when shooting, and it can be located either at the bottom or in the middle of the shaft.

For younger players, it’s generally recommended to choose a stick with a low kick point.

This allows for easier loading and quicker release, which can help develop players who are still working on their shot accuracy.

However, as players get older and more experienced, they often prefer a stick with a mid-kick point. This provides more power and puck control when shooting, making it ideal for players who are looking to take their game to the next level.

So, when it comes to choosing a youth players hockey stick, kick point matters.
